West Nile Claims Life
State Health Officials say a Luzerne County man has died after contracting the West Nile Virus. 82-year-old Joseph Krawetz of Wilkes- Barre passed away Sunday after battling the virus for three weeks. Krawetz is the first person in the state of Pennsylvania to succumb to the disease since 2008. Krawetz dedicated his life to law enforcement as a Wilkes-Barre Police Officer for over 25-years and eventually took the title of Captain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, fewer than one percent of people infected with the virus will develop serious illness, and only three to five percent of them will die. Mosquito repellent as well as removing pools of stagnant water around the house is recommended because there is no vaccine.
