UPDATE: Mom Pleads Guilty
A mother accused of shaking her infant son to near death, entered a
surprise guilty plea Friday in Luzerne County Court and was sentenced
immediately to spend the next 5-10 years behind bars.
Andrea Vargas, of West Hazleton, was due in court Friday for a pre-trial
hearing, but instead, the young mother took responsibility for the
injuries received by her newborn son.
Police were called to Vargas’s apartment on Tamarack Street back in
February of 2011, where they found the infant unresponsive.
Vargas eventually admitted to shaking the child. Doctors also found
other injuries to the infant that were already healing like several
Investigators say the baby’s father, Jorge Robles, tried reviving his
son after the incident by performing CPR.
The child is now 22 months old and remains in critical condition at a
Children’s Rehabilitation Facility.
Vargas was scheduled to stand trial the last week in August.
