Save Our Libraries!
There are 5 libraries in the Greater Hazleton area. All are under the
Hazleton Public Library System and all are in danger of closing. You can
help change that on April 24th. When you head to the polls on Election
Day, you will be asked a question and a yes or no answer will be needed.
Should funding for the Hazleton Area Public Library System continue to
come from the Hazleton Area School District Budget or should a new tax
be dedicated exclusively to the library? Right now, the money comes from
the district and the school board decides how much money will go to the
library. A committee has been formed to save the libraries and to
encourage voters to say yes on April 24th. Other than the main branch in
downtown Hazleton, there is a library in Nuremberg which is a brand new
facility, The Valley, Freeland and McAdoo. At one point, library funding
came from a dedicated tax. In the late 1990’s it was shifted. The Save
our Libraries Committee is reaching out in many ways to the community to
make sure the answer is yes on Election Day. There are four billboards
around the area, a website you can visit www dot save hapl.com and you
can also “Like” save HPL on Facebook. All of the promotions are being
paid for through private funding.
