Pottsville-Area Bars See Decline in Business
To Paul Lazarchick, owner of The Zone, the booze business is no longer booming.
Parts of Schuylkill County were once known for its endless taps. It’s been said that towns, like Pottsville used to have a bar per block. But many bar owners are still struggling to pull out of the 2008 recession. And as night out is now considered a luxury, schmoozing with neighborhood regulars might soon be considered a thing of the past.
Lazarchick has seen sales at his bar and resturant slip since the recession. He also says overly-strict enforcement of D-U-I’s, and other regulations like a no smoking ban contribute to bars seeing a loss in business
But Lazarchick sees the glass half full and is thankful to still be in business after 21 years. He’s adapted by offering catering. Others around Pottsvile, like Yockos, Clarion House and Restaurant at the Station haven’t been so lucky. They’ve all closed after being open for between one to eight years. And Cactus Jacks, which opened in February 2012, closed just two weeks ago.
