Hazleton Murder Update: Victim ID’d…Searching for Shooter
The search continues for the man who police say shot a man to death in the middle of the night along a Hazleton Street. It happened on Alter Street near 4th Street. City Police got the call around 2 a.m. Saturday. Initial reports were that shots were fired, but police found a man, in the middle of the street, with multiple gunshot wounds. 34-year-old Erick Gwaltney was pronounced dead at the scene. We know Gwaltney was with another man when the shooting happened, he too was shot at, but managed to escape serious injury. People we spoke with in the area told us the duo was leaving an Alter Street bar. Police say the victim didn’t live far from the scene of the crime; Gwalney’s address is listed as 649 Alter Street. News 13 was there Saturday afternoon as police and detectives searched the victim’s home and removed some items from the place including Gwaltney’s computer. Police believe the shooter is no stranger to the area where the crime happened. News 13 stopped by the Alter Street Business District Monday morning where residents, many too scared to talk on camera, told news 13 that the man police believe pulled the trigger, is around the neighborhood all the time, but not since the murder. Investigators believe the shooter’s name is “Ricardo” or “Richard”, a Hispanic male in his 40’s who is known to ride a mountain bike. Police are urging anyone with information about the murder or knows where the suspect may be hiding to call 9-1-1 immediately. The suspected shooter is known to frequent many Alter Street businesses and looks for odd jobs. He stands about 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 8 inches tall, is in his 40’s with a stocky build, mustache and dark and slightly graying hair.
