Alleged Abductor Caught
We finally know what forced a pregnant woman to jump from a moving car Wednesday and what led up to that scary move is quite disturbing. 26-year-old Carlos Cortes of Diamond Avenue in Hazleton is the man responsible. He allegedly abducted a 22-year-old pregnant woman and is now behind bars. Police say Cortes covered the face of a 22-year-old pregnant woman and forced her into his vehicle and sexually assaulted her Wednesday afternoon. Fearing for her life, the woman, who did not speak English, jumped from the passenger’s side window of Cortes’ car to escape and rolled along the side of Route 940 in Ebervale. Emergency workers found the woman bleeding and screaming for help on the side of the road. Witnesses that watched the horrific incident play out went to the nearby post office and dialed 9-1-1 for help. At a press conference at City Hall Friday morning, Police said they are linking Cortes to another attempted abduction along Shaft Road, near Diamond Avenue, on Monday. Cortes’ vehicle was a Dark blue, Ford Taurus. Police are now trying to link Cortes with any other incidents that may have happened. If you have any information, you are asked to contact Hazleton City Police immediately. As for the victim of Wednesday’s abduction who was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital, she has been released. Cortes was put behind bars Thursday on charges of kidnapping, indecent assault and false imprisonment and was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Jamie Dixon.
