Two American flags were found floating instead of flying in Tamaqua late last week after being taken from parking meters in the downtown. Many in the town are outraged and the police are on the hunt for who committed this heartless crime. Someone noticed the first of two American flags found in the Little Schuylkill River Thursday morning and reported it to Tamaqua Police. The flag is normally mounted on a nearby meter by the Tamaqua American Legion. A member of the Tamaqua American Legion went into the water to retrieve the flag. A second flag was discovered as well. The Tamaqua American Legion, recently purchased the flags to fly on the meters after receiving donations from residents. Now the Tamaqua American Legion, Tamaqua Crime Watch and Tamaqua Volunteers group are offering a one-time $1,775 reward for the first person who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who committed this disturbing crime.
News 13 has learned that this has happened multiple times over the past few years, at the same location. Anyone with information about the flag desecration is asked to call the Tamaqua Police Department at (570) 668-5000.
